You may genuinely believe that God is your Father and still find yourself over-explaining. You may know your identity is secure in Christ and still replay criticism for hours. You may believe the Father provides and still feel responsible for holding everything together. You may believe in grace and still speak to yourself in ways you would never speak to someone you love.

Many of us spend years asking, “Why do I keep reacting like this?” We become discouraged by our anxiety, our defensiveness, our impatience, our fear, or our tendency to withdraw. We pray for more self-control. We ask God to help us become more patient, more trusting, and more loving. Those are good prayers, and Scripture certainly calls us to grow in all of those ways.
